Chongqing, one of China’s “Four Great Ancient Capitals,” boasts a history spanning over 3,000 years. From its origins as a strategic military post, it has grown into a vital economic hub and a key player in China’s inland development.
Situated at the meeting point of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Chongqing’s history stretches back to the ancient Ba Kingdom and continued through numerous Chinese dynasties. During the Ming and Qing periods, it thrived as an important river port and regional administrative center. The city’s name, meaning “Double-Blessed,” was given in 1189 during the Southern Song Dynasty, highlighting its fortunate location.
Since becoming a direct-controlled municipality in 1997 (joining Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), Chongqing has undergone rapid transformation into a major economic powerhouse. Despite this growth, it remains deeply connected to its cultural roots, with ancient temples, traditional stilt houses, and historic districts. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, fiery cuisine, and warm hospitality, Chongqing is one of China’s largest and most vibrant municipalities.

This 11 days trip was a dream come true, we started in Hong Kong, and we flew to Chongqing to begin our Yangtze River cruise. Hong Kong is my favourite city now! The view from Victoria Peak and the ferry ride across the harbor were perfect. Panda Tourism set us up with an incredible guide, Sarah, who was super easygoing and made exploring the city feel like hanging out with a friend. And my husband loved loved loved the cruise. The scenery along the river, especially the Three Gorges, was absolutely stunning. The cruise itself was super comfortable, with great food and a relaxing vibe. Panda Tourism took care of every little detail, so we never had to stress about logistics. It was worth every penny.

We wanted a mix of adventure and relaxation on our trip to China, and Panda Tourism delivered big time. We had a great time with our guuide, Emily. She is so friendly and knowledgeable, she made navigating the city super easy, and her tips on where to go in my free time were spot on. We went to Chengdu to visit the pandas, and the cruise experience was just awesome! The Three Gorges were jaw-dropping, and the shore excursions gave me a great mix of history and culture. My favorite stop was the Shennong Stream, where we got to ride in traditional boats through the most beautiful scenery. I loved spending my evenings watching the sunset over the river. This trip was really really beautiful. I would go back and choose them again.

Not our first time in china. Decided to get a guide to understand the garden and lake designs better. I recommend it for anyone who really wants to understand the history of the Suzhou gardens and this area of China. Nanjing was unexpectedly beautiful. Logistics wise, from the moment we landed in Shanghai, they had everything covered, we took trains and had private cars. Returning to Shanghai felt like a dream after Covid, glad we could come again after 8 years, definitely a lot has changed since our last trip. The Eastern china tour is great, we recommend it especially for seniors, it's more relaxed and very, very rich in history. It's especially a great background setting for learning about ancient chinese painting, literature, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
